One of the most important architectural details of any room are the windows but most people can’t come up with good drapery ideas to help enhance those details. Most rooms aren’t blessed with the perfect window size, placement or details but if you use your curtains and drapes cleverly, you can overcome any shortfalls in your windows. Here are 4 drapery ideas that can help you transform your windows.
If Your Windows Are Too Short
Do you wish you had floor to ceiling windows in your bedroom but all you have is a short stubby window? You might think that you have to use short curtains for the window because that is mostly what you see on those types of windows, but when it comes to window treatments you can really do whatever you want. If you want your windows to appear larger, simply use longer drapes.
You can install the rod higher above the top of the window to make it appear like it goes almost to the ceiling. If you use a valance then fit it so that the bottom of the valance ends just at the top of the window – this will make it appear as if the window actually goes up to the top of the valance.
Another idea to make your windows appear longer is to use draperies that actually go to the floor and cover the window area with sheers. This will give the illusion of a long floor to ceiling window.
If Your Windows Are Too Small
A lot of people have small casement windows in their living room and are looking for drapery ideas to make them appear larger. This is easy to do by simply expanding the area you put the drapes in. Instead of having the drapes fit to the size of the window, go larger. Install the curtain rod or valance much higher than the window itself and make it wider than the window.
When you put up the draperies, have them go to the outer edge of the widow, but then extend along the wall another foot (or however wide you want the windows to seem). This will give the illusion that the widow itself is wider. Again, use sheers to cover the window and have the sheers and drapes go to the floor or end 1 foot from the floor to make the window appear longer too.
If You Want A More Elegant Look
In some cases, the décor you want for a particular room might not match with the architecture of the room. For example, you might have a mid century modern ranch but you want an elegant design for your living room. One of the drapery ideas that works in any room to make it look more elegant is to use extra long drapes that puddle on the floor. Of course you also want to use an elegant material such as silk or velvet for the drapes and use a sheer or lace inset.
If You Want A Sleeker Modern Look
If you want a modern look, using draperies with tabs or large grommets is a good way to go. Also, go for solid colors instead of floral or prints. Modern is all about sleek and clean lines so you might even consider just using sheers, or having wooden blinds instead of any type of drapes at all.
It’s not an easy task to change your window to something it is not, but these drapery ideas show you how you can give the illusion that the window is something it is not. As you can see, any room can be made to look however you want if you know how to use your curtains and drapes the right way.
